A day for the craft of working leather by hand: cutting, stitching, tooling and finishing hides into belts, wallets, bags and more.

National Leathercraft Day falls on Sunday, August 15, 2027. That is 292 days away.
Leathercraft is the work of turning tanned hide into useful things. A belt, a wallet, a knife sheath, a dog collar. The tools are old and simple: a sharp knife, an awl or set of pricking irons, two needles and waxed thread.
Much of it is patient handwork. Many makers sew with a saddle stitch, where two needles pass through the same hole from opposite sides. It holds well because if one thread breaks, the other keeps the seam together. Edges get sanded, dampened and rubbed with a wooden slicker until they turn smooth and glossy.
Then there is tooling. Vegetable tanned leather, when lightly dampened, takes an impression from metal stamps and swivel knives, so a plain strap can carry a border of leaves or a set of initials. The same leather darkens and softens with handling over the years, which is why an old saddle looks the way it does.
People mark the day by making something small. A keychain or card holder needs only a scrap and an afternoon, and it teaches the basic moves. Others pull out a worn belt or boots and give them a cleaning and conditioning, or visit a local saddlery or craft guild to watch someone who has done this for a long time.
The first project usually comes out a little crooked. The stitches on the second one are already straighter.
