A day for writing letters by hand: picking paper, finding the words, addressing an envelope and sending something real through the mail.

National Letter Writing Day falls on Monday, December 7, 2026. That is 41 days away.
A handwritten letter is a slow kind of message. You choose the paper, find a pen that behaves, and work out what you want to say before you say it, because crossing out shows.
That slowness is most of the appeal. A text arrives and is gone in a minute. A letter sits on a kitchen counter, gets read twice, and sometimes ends up in a shoebox for years. The person who receives it gets your handwriting along with your words, and handwriting carries a surprising amount of personality: the loops, the slant, the way the lines drift uphill near the bottom of the page.
People mark the day by writing to someone they have not spoken to in a while, sending a thank you that is overdue, or dropping a note to a grandparent who would much rather have paper than an email. Some keep pen pals and use the day to catch up on replies. Others try a postcard, which is a letter with the pressure taken off, since there is only room for a few sentences.
You do not need fancy stationery. Plain paper folded in thirds works fine, and a letter does not have to be long to matter. Opening with something specific (a memory, a question, what the weather is doing outside your window) tends to get a letter going faster than staring at "Dear" and waiting.
The last step is the stamp, a tiny square of paper that carries the whole thing across town or across the country.
