History ยท May 30
Loomis Day recalls Mahlon Loomis, an American dentist remembered for early experiments in sending signals through the air without wires.

Loomis Day falls on Sunday, May 30, 2027. That is 215 days away.
Mahlon Loomis was an American dentist with an unusual side interest. He wanted to send messages through the air, with no wire connecting one end to the other. Loomis Day is generally linked to him and to that idea.
His experiments are usually described with a striking image. Two kites flown from separate hilltops in Virginia, each trailing a wire, and a signal said to pass between them. He later received a United States patent for a method of wireless telegraphy. How much his work led to later radio is still argued over by historians, and that open question is part of what keeps his name interesting.
Marking the day is mostly a matter of curiosity. People read about early experiments with electricity, talk about how messages traveled before radio, or take a moment to notice how much of daily life now moves invisibly through the air. A phone call, a car radio and a weather report all rely on signals nobody sees.
A dentist tinkering with kites and wire is not the usual picture of an inventor. Plenty of early science happened that way, though, in spare hours, on borrowed hills, with homemade equipment and a stubborn hunch.
The kites themselves were ordinary. The wire was copper.
