A little reason to celebrate

National M&M Day

Food ยท October 13

A day for M&M's, the small candy-coated chocolates with a printed letter, and the many ways people sort, share and snack on them.

National M&M Day

National M&M Day falls on Wednesday, October 13, 2027. That is 351 days away.

M&M's are small pieces of milk chocolate sealed inside a thin, crisp sugar shell, each one stamped with a lowercase m. The shell is the clever part. It keeps the chocolate from smearing on your fingers, which is why they turn up in pockets, glove boxes and movie seats.

The plain kind is the classic, but the peanut version has a loyal following of its own, with a whole peanut at the center and a rounder, lumpier shape. Other fillings come and go. The colors stay bright and cheerful, and a handful poured into a palm looks a little like a tiny paint set.

People mark the day mostly by eating them, often in very personal ways. Some sort a bag by color before starting. Some eat one color at a time, saving a favorite for last. Others let the shell slowly dissolve on the tongue to see how long the chocolate holds out. Bakers press them into cookie dough, scatter them over brownies, or stir them into trail mix with nuts and pretzels.

They also make good counters. Teachers and parents have long used them for simple math, graphing how many of each color landed in a bag, and the results rarely match from one bag to the next.

If you bake with them, press a few extra onto the tops of cookies just after they come out of the oven, so the colors stay on show.
