A little reason to celebrate

National Matchmaker Day

Fun ยท August 31

A day about matchmakers, the people who introduce two others in the hope they will hit it off, from village go-betweens to helpful friends.

National Matchmaker Day

National Matchmaker Day falls on Tuesday, August 31, 2027. That is 308 days away.

A matchmaker is someone who brings two people together in the hope they will like each other. Sometimes it is a job. More often it is a friend, an aunt or a coworker who says, "You two should meet," and means it.

The role is old and shows up in many cultures. In some communities a matchmaker helped families arrange marriages, weighing things like background, temperament and family ties. Today the work is mostly informal. People set up friends on dinners, invite two likely candidates to the same party, or pass along a phone number with a little nervous optimism.

Good matchmaking takes attention. The best ones notice who laughs at the same things, who shares a stubborn love of hiking, and who would never survive a road trip together. They also know when to step back, since an introduction is only an introduction.

Not every match is romantic. Plenty of lasting friendships, business partnerships and running buddies started because someone thought two people should talk. Introducing a new neighbor to the person three doors down counts too.

Many people can name the friend who introduced them to someone important. That friend tends to remember it, and usually brings it up at weddings.
