A little reason to celebrate

Monkey Day

Animal · Fun · December 14

Monkey Day is a light, curious look at monkeys: how they live, what makes them clever, and simple ways to appreciate them kindly.

Monkey Day

Monkey Day falls on Monday, December 14, 2026. That is 48 days away.

Monkeys are primates, part of the same broad family tree as apes and humans. There are many kinds, from small marmosets to sturdy baboons, and they live in forests, grasslands and mountains across much of the world.

Most monkeys are social. They live in groups, groom one another, and keep track of who gets along with whom. Watching a troop for a few minutes feels a bit like overhearing a family reunion where everyone has opinions about seating.

Scientists often sort monkeys into two groups. Monkeys of the Americas, such as capuchins and howler monkeys, tend to have flatter noses, and some can grip branches with their tails. Monkeys of Africa and Asia, such as macaques and baboons, cannot hang by their tails, and many spend more time on the ground.

The day is usually marked in easy ways. People visit zoos, read about a species they have never heard of, or draw and share monkey pictures. Teachers use it as a reason to talk about rainforests and the animals that call them home.

One gentle point for animal lovers: monkeys are wild animals with complex needs, and they do best with their own kind in their own habitats. Admiring them from a respectful distance, or through a good documentary, suits them well.

If you get the chance to watch a capuchin crack a nut with a stone, it is a fine thing to see.
