Its care reaches well past the famous canyons and geysers, to battlefields, seashores, monuments, historic homes and small sites tucked into city neighborhoods. The day turns attention to the agency itself and to the places it keeps open for everyone.
Most people meet the Park Service through a ranger. Rangers lead walks, answer questions at visitor centers, give talks by campfire light and explain why a particular ridge or doorway matters. Their flat-brimmed hat is one of the more recognizable pieces of headwear in the country, and it tends to appear in a lot of vacation photos.
The agency's job runs in two directions at once. It protects landscapes, wildlife and historic buildings, and it also welcomes millions of visitors who want to see them. Trails, signs, boardwalks and quiet rules about staying on the path are all part of how those two goals get along.
Marking the day usually means going outside or looking back. Some people visit a nearby site they have driven past for years. Others read about a historic place in their own state, or dig out an old park map from a family trip. Kids can often take part in the Junior Ranger program, which hands out activity booklets and gives badges to those who finish them.
If you visit, keep a respectful distance from any animals you see and leave rocks, plants and artifacts where they are. The next visitor is hoping to find them there too.
