A day for eating outdoors: packing simple food, finding a patch of grass or a park table, and sharing a meal in the open air.

National Picnic Day falls on Friday, April 23, 2027. That is 178 days away.
A picnic is a meal carried somewhere else and eaten outside. That is the whole idea, and it has held up well. A blanket on the grass, a bench by a lake or a tailgate in a parking lot all count.
The food tends to be the kind that travels. Sandwiches, cut fruit, cold fried chicken, pasta salad, a bag of chips that gets passed around until it is empty. Nothing fussy, nothing that needs a knife and fork at the same time. Part of the appeal is that the meal is simpler than dinner at home, yet it feels like more of an occasion.
The setting does a lot of the work. Bread tastes better under a tree, and an ordinary afternoon stretches out when nobody is clearing plates. Some people bring a frisbee or a deck of cards. Others bring a book and do very little. Ants are usually invited whether anyone likes it or not.
Packing is where a picnic succeeds or fails. A cooler with ice packs keeps cold things cold, a damp towel handles sticky hands, and a spare bag makes it easy to carry trash out. Folding the blanket with the dirty side in saves a step later.
The best picnics are often the unplanned ones, put together from whatever is in the fridge and eaten twenty minutes from home.
