New Year's Eve is the last night of the year, marked with countdowns, toasts, noisemakers and staying up late to greet the new year.

New Year's Eve falls on Thursday, December 31, 2026. That is 65 days away.
The last night of the year gets a countdown. Across the country, people gather in living rooms, bars, town squares and kitchens to watch the clock run out and greet the new year at midnight.
The traditions are familiar and a little theatrical. Someone counts backward from ten. Glasses get raised, often with something sparkling. Party hats appear, noisemakers squeal, and couples kiss as the hour turns. In many cities a ball or other large object is lowered on a tall pole as the final seconds tick away, and plenty of people watch that moment on television from the couch.
Food plays a part too. Some families set out snacks and finger foods to last the long evening, while others keep a regional custom, such as eating black-eyed peas for luck on the first day of the year. Fireworks light up the sky in many places right after midnight.
Not everyone stays out late. A quiet night with a movie, a board game or an early bedtime is a common choice, and some people mark midnight in a time zone to the east and call it a night. Others spend the evening writing resolutions, a habit of naming one thing to change or try in the year ahead.
The night is about endings as much as beginnings. Looking back over the year, with its good stretches and its rough ones, is part of what makes the countdown feel like it means something. When the clock finally reaches zero, the first sound in most rooms is a cheer, followed by the slightly off-key singing of a song nobody quite remembers the words to.
