National Nut Day is about nuts of every kind, from almonds and walnuts to pecans and peanuts, and the many ways people snack, bake and cook with them.

National Nut Day falls on Friday, October 22, 2027. That is 360 days away.
Nuts are seeds wrapped in a hard shell, packed into a form that a tree can drop and a squirrel can bury. People have been cracking them open for a very long time, and the kitchen still finds new jobs for them.
The word covers more than a botanist would allow. Almonds are the seeds of a fruit related to peaches. Peanuts grow underground and are legumes, closer to peas and beans. Cashews hang below a fleshy fruit called the cashew apple. In the pantry, though, they all sit on the same shelf, and nobody seems to mind.
Each one has its own texture. Walnuts are soft and a little bitter. Pecans are buttery. Hazelnuts turn fragrant when toasted, and pistachios come in shells that are half open, which makes them easy to start and hard to stop.
Marking the day usually means eating some. A handful of roasted mixed nuts works. So does a pan of brownies with walnuts, a pecan pie, or a spoonful of almond butter on toast. Toasting raw nuts in a dry skillet for a few minutes deepens their flavor, and the smell tells you when they are ready.
Nuts in the shell keep well in a cool place. Shelled ones hold their oils better in the refrigerator or freezer, where they stay fresh much longer than they would in a warm cupboard.
