A little reason to celebrate

Origami Day

Hobby ยท November 11

Origami Day is about the Japanese art of folding paper into cranes, boxes, animals and flowers, usually from one uncut square sheet.

Origami Day

Origami Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. That is 15 days away.

Origami is the art of folding paper into shapes without cutting or gluing it. A single square sheet can become a crane, a frog, a box or a flower, depending on the order of the folds.

The word comes from Japanese, joining the words for folding and paper. Traditional models start from a square, and many share a few basic bases, such as the bird base and the waterbomb base. Learn those, and a surprising number of designs open up.

The pleasure is partly in the slowness. You crease, unfold, reverse a fold, and somewhere around step twelve a flat piece of paper starts to look like a beak. Some people stay with simple models for years. Others move on to modular origami, where many identical folded units slot together into stars and spheres, or to elaborate insects with legs and antennae.

You do not need special supplies. Origami paper is thin, square and often colored on one side, but printer paper trimmed to a square works fine, and so do old magazine pages or gift wrap. Sharp creases matter more than fancy paper. Running a fingernail along each fold makes the next step easier.

The paper crane is the model most people try first, and for good reason. It teaches the basics, it fits in a palm, and it looks finished even when the folds are a little crooked.
