A day for paperback books: the light, bendable, soft-covered editions that fit in a bag and get read on buses, beaches and porches.

Paperback Book Day falls on Friday, July 30, 2027. That is 276 days away.
A paperback is a book bound in a flexible card cover instead of rigid boards. The pages are glued along the spine, and the whole thing weighs little enough to carry all day without noticing.
That lightness changed how people read. Paperbacks are usually cheaper to make than hardcovers, so they tend to cost less, and they slip into a coat pocket or a beach bag. They are the books that come along on trips, get passed between friends and end up with sand in the gutter of the pages.
They also age in a way people grow fond of. Spines crease, corners soften and covers curl after a few readings. A well-read paperback shows where it has been, and used bookstores often have whole walls of them, sorted loosely by genre and priced low.
Marking the day mostly means reading one. Pull an old favorite off the shelf, try something from a library's paperback rack, or leave a finished book in a little free library box for a stranger. Some readers like the smaller mass-market size for travel, while others prefer the larger trade paperback with roomier print.
If a paperback's spine has started to split, a strip of clear book tape along the inside can keep the pages together for another round of readers.
