National Paranormal Day turns attention to ghosts, strange lights and unexplained sounds, and the stories people tell about them.

National Paranormal Day falls on Monday, May 3, 2027. That is 188 days away.
Paranormal is the word for things that seem to sit outside ordinary explanation. Ghosts, haunted houses, odd lights in the sky and footsteps in an empty hallway all fall under it. Some people believe in these things, some are firmly skeptical, and many enjoy the stories either way.
Most towns have at least one. A theater where the seats fold down on their own. An inn with a room nobody books twice. A stretch of road where drivers report a figure that is gone when they look again. These tales get passed along at sleepovers, around campfires and in local history books, and they tend to grow a little with each telling.
The day is often marked with stories. People read classic ghost tales, watch a favorite spooky film, or ask an older relative about the strange thing that happened in the old family house. Some join a guided ghost walk, which usually doubles as a tour of local history, since every haunting comes with a backstory about who lived there and what happened.
Skeptics have their own way in. Plenty of eerie experiences have plain causes: old houses creak as wood cools, pipes knock, and drafts move doors. Figuring out why a floorboard groans at night can be as satisfying as any ghost story.
The best haunted tales usually start small, with one sound nobody can explain and one person who heard it.
