National Parfait Day falls on Wednesday, November 25, 2026. That is 29 days away.
A parfait is a dish built in layers, usually in a tall glass so every stripe shows. In the United States it most often means yogurt stacked with fruit and granola, though it can just as easily be pudding, whipped cream and crumbled cookies.
The word is French for "perfect." In France a parfait is traditionally a frozen dessert, something closer to a rich, smooth ice cream. The American version kept the name and loosened up considerably, becoming a thing people eat at breakfast as readily as after dinner.
The pleasure is mostly in the spoon. A good parfait gives you a little of everything in each bite: something creamy, something soft and sweet, something that crunches. Clear glasses are part of the appeal, since the layers are half the point.
Making one at home takes no special skill. Spoon in a base, add fruit, scatter a crunchy layer, and repeat until the glass is full. Berries, sliced bananas, peaches and mango all work well. Granola, toasted nuts or crushed graham crackers bring the texture.
One practical habit helps. Add the crunchy layer just before eating, because granola left sitting in yogurt turns soft within an hour or so.
