A little reason to celebrate

National Pâté Day

Food · November 1

A day for pâté, the smooth or coarse spread of seasoned ground meat, liver or fish, usually eaten cold on bread or crackers.

National Pâté Day

National Pâté Day falls on Sunday, November 1, 2026. That is 5 days away.

Pâté is a rich mixture of finely ground meat, fat and seasonings, often made with liver. It can be silky enough to spread with a butter knife or coarse and rustic, with visible bits of pork and herbs. The word is French, and so is much of the tradition, but versions turn up across many kitchens.

Some pâtés are baked in a loaf-shaped dish called a terrine, then chilled and served in slices. Others are packed into small pots and sealed under a layer of butter or fat, which keeps them moist. Chicken liver pâté is one of the most familiar kinds, and it is surprisingly quick to make at home. There are fish versions too, made with smoked salmon or trout, and vegetarian spreads built from mushrooms or lentils that borrow the same idea.

Pâté is mostly a cold food and a slow one. People tend to eat it in small amounts, on toasted baguette or crackers, alongside something sharp to cut the richness. Cornichons, mustard, pickled onions and fruit preserves all do that job well. A board with pâté, cheese and bread can stand in for a light supper with very little cooking.

Texture is the thing people argue about most. Fans of the smooth style like it almost like mousse, while others want a country pâté with real chew. Letting either kind sit out of the fridge for a few minutes before serving softens the fat and brings the flavor forward.
