Peace Officers Memorial Day

Commemorative ยท May 15

A day honoring American law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty, and the families and colleagues who carry their memory.

Peace Officers Memorial Day falls on Saturday, May 15, 2027. That is 200 days away.

Peace officers are the people sworn to keep public order: police officers, sheriffs and their deputies, state troopers, and federal agents among them. This observance remembers those who lost their lives while doing that work.

The tone is quiet. Many towns hold short ceremonies at police stations, courthouses or local memorials, where names are read aloud and a moment of silence is kept. Some include a bugler playing taps, a bell rung once for each name, or an honor guard standing at attention. Flags are often flown at half-staff.

For families, the day can be a public moment for a private loss. A name read in a town square tells them the community still remembers. For officers still serving, it is a time to stand beside colleagues and think of partners, classmates and friends who did not come home.

Memorial walls carry many of these names. Visitors sometimes leave flowers, notes or a coin, or make a pencil rubbing of a single engraved name to keep. Local departments often keep their own plaques in a lobby or hallway, which many residents pass for years without stopping to read.

Taking a minute at one of those plaques, reading the names and the years of service beside them, is a simple way to take part. Each line stands for a person who started a shift expecting to finish it.
