A little reason to celebrate

Plant Something Day

Nature ยท May 19

A day for putting something in the ground, or in a pot, and watching what happens next: seeds, bulbs, herbs, trees or a single houseplant.

Plant Something Day

Plant Something Day falls on Wednesday, May 19, 2027. That is 204 days away.

A seed is a small plant packed for travel. It carries a tiny root, a first shoot and a store of food, and it waits for water and warmth before it does anything at all. Plant Something Day asks you to give one of those waiting seeds, or a bulb, cutting or seedling, a place to start.

The word something is generous. It can mean a tree in the yard, a row of lettuce, a pot of basil on a windowsill or a single bean pressed into a paper cup of soil. Apartment dwellers can join in as fully as anyone with acres. A glass of water and a sprig of mint from the kitchen will often grow roots on its own, which feels a little like the plant did the work for you.

Most people mark the day with their hands in the dirt. Families plant seeds with children, who tend to check on them several times an hour. Neighbors share cuttings from spiderwebbing houseplants like pothos and spider plants, which root easily. Some people choose flowers that feed bees and butterflies, others pick something they can eat later in the season.

The planting takes minutes. The interesting part comes after, in the first week, when the soil cracks and a pale loop of stem pushes up before it straightens and opens its first pair of leaves.
