A day for Pluto, the small, icy dwarf planet at the far edge of our solar system, and the long story of how people came to know it.

Pluto Day falls on Thursday, February 18, 2027. That is 114 days away.
Pluto is a small, icy world that circles the Sun far beyond Neptune. It was once counted as the ninth planet. Astronomers now call it a dwarf planet, one of many frozen bodies in a distant region called the Kuiper Belt.
Its story has a strong American thread. Pluto was discovered at Lowell Observatory in Arizona by Clyde Tombaugh, a young astronomer who compared photographs of the night sky, looking for a faint dot that moved. It was slow, patient work, and he found it.
For a long time Pluto was little more than that dot. Then the New Horizons spacecraft flew past and sent back pictures of mountains of ice, smooth plains and a pale region shaped roughly like a heart. Pluto also has a large moon, Charon, big enough that the two are sometimes described as a double system. A year on Pluto lasts far longer than a human lifetime, so it has not finished a single orbit since anyone first spotted it.
People mark the day by looking up. Planetariums and astronomy clubs often talk about Pluto, and the New Horizons images are easy to find and still striking. Some people revisit the old debate about whether Pluto should be a planet, which tends to get more heated than a debate about a ball of ice and rock several billion kilometers away has any right to.
You cannot see Pluto with the naked eye or a small backyard telescope. Seeing it takes a large telescope and some patience, much like the first time.
