Polar Bear Plunge Day is about the cold-water dip, when groups wade or run into icy lakes, rivers and seas, then hurry back out to towels.

Polar Bear Plunge Day falls on Friday, January 1, 2027. That is 66 days away.
A polar bear plunge is a quick dip into very cold water, usually outdoors and usually in a crowd. People line up on a beach or lakeshore, wait for a signal, and run in. Most are back on dry land within a minute or two. The name borrows from the polar bear, an animal that swims comfortably in Arctic seas and has thick fur and fat to keep it warm. Human plungers have neither, which explains the speed of the exit.
The experience is mostly noise and shock. There is shrieking, splashing and a lot of laughter, followed by a scramble for blankets, robes and dry socks. Costumes show up often. So do hats, capes and the occasional person who walks in slowly and with great dignity, as if testing bathwater.
Many plunges are organized events with lifeguards, warming tents and a crowd cheering from the shore. Some groups use them to raise money for local charities, with plungers collecting pledges before they get wet. Others are informal gatherings of friends who just like the tradition.
Watching counts as taking part. Spectators hold the towels, pour the hot cocoa and take the photos everyone will want later. The best plunge stories tend to be told around a heater afterward, by someone whose hair is still dripping and whose teeth have not quite stopped chattering.
