A day for popcorn, the whole-grain snack that puffs from a hard kernel into a crunchy, salty, buttery bowl worth sharing.

National Popcorn Day falls on Tuesday, January 19, 2027. That is 84 days away.
Popcorn starts as a hard little kernel with a bit of moisture sealed inside. Heat turns that moisture to steam, pressure builds, and the hull gives way. The starch inside puffs out and sets into the white, crunchy shape everyone recognizes.
Not every corn will do this. Popcorn is its own type of corn, with a tough outer hull that holds the steam in until the last moment. The kernels that stay closed at the bottom of the bowl are usually ones that lost too much moisture or had a cracked hull.
Most people meet popcorn in one of a few forms. There is the stovetop batch shaken in a covered pot, the bag from the microwave, the air popper that hums on the counter, and the big tub at the movie theater. Butter and salt are the classic pairing, but popcorn takes well to almost anything: grated cheese, cinnamon sugar, chili powder, a drizzle of caramel. Kettle corn gets its sweet and salty crust from sugar added right in the pot.
The sound is half the experience. A slow tick or two, then a rush, then a scattered finish that tells you to take it off the heat before anything scorches. Anyone who has made it on the stove learns to listen for that slowdown.
A bowl of popcorn also has a way of ending up in the middle of the couch, within reach of everyone, which may be why it suits a movie night so well.
