A little reason to celebrate

National Princess Day

Fun ยท November 18

A light, fun day about princesses, from fairy tale heroines and storybook castles to dress-up crowns and the real royal daughters of history.

National Princess Day

National Princess Day falls on Wednesday, November 18, 2026. That is 22 days away.

Princesses have been the stars of stories for a very long time. A princess is the daughter of a king or queen, or a woman who marries a prince, and in folk tales she is often the one who outwits a dragon, solves a riddle or waits out a curse.

The storybook version and the real one are fairly different. Real princesses have spent their lives at official duties, schooling in languages and a good deal of standing politely at ceremonies. The fairy tale kind gets the glass slippers, talking animals and towers with very long climbs.

Most people mark the day at home. Children put on paper crowns and plastic tiaras, and adults sometimes join them. Families reread favorite tales or watch an animated classic. Some people tell a new story where the princess fixes the castle plumbing herself.

Older stories make good company here. Many fairy tales were told aloud for generations before anyone wrote them down, so the same princess can turn up in different versions with different endings. Reading two versions side by side shows how much a story can change as it travels.

A crown is easy to make from a strip of cardboard, some glue and whatever shiny scraps are in the drawer.
