A little reason to celebrate
Hobby · Family · March 2
A day for reading together, especially with children, at home, in classrooms and in libraries across the United States.

Read Across America Day falls on Tuesday, March 2, 2027. That is 126 days away.
Picture a classroom where the lesson plan has been set aside for a stack of picture books, a parent volunteer on a tiny chair, and twenty kids leaning in to see the pages. That is the general spirit here. The day is about reading, and in particular about reading with and to young people.
Schools and libraries tend to make the most of it. Teachers invite guest readers, students dress as favorite characters, and reading corners fill up with pillows. At home it can be as simple as an extra bedtime story, or letting a child pick the book and do the reading out loud for once.
Reading aloud is its own skill. Good readers slow down, give characters different voices, and pause before turning the page so the listener can guess what happens next. Children often ask for the same book again and again, which can test an adult's patience, though it also means the child is learning the words by heart and starting to read along.
The word across in the name points to the idea of a whole country reading at once, in big cities and small towns, in English and in other languages spoken at home. A library card makes that easy, since borrowing books costs nothing in most public libraries.
The best book for the occasion is usually the one already on the shelf with a cracked spine and a few crayon marks inside.
