All about the red rose: what it is, why it stands for love and respect, and simple ways to enjoy one in a garden, a vase or a park.

National Red Rose Day falls on Saturday, June 12, 2027. That is 228 days away.
A red rose is one of the most recognized flowers there is. Layered petals, a deep color that runs from bright scarlet to nearly black crimson, and a thorny stem that asks you to hold it with some care.
Roses are woody shrubs, and gardeners grow them as bushes, climbers and small hedges. Many red varieties carry a scent, though not all do. Some modern roses were bred mostly for looks and long vase life, so a florist's rose may smell faintly or not at all, while an older garden rose can fill a porch.
The red rose has long stood for love, and it shows up at weddings, anniversaries and memorials. It can also signal respect or courage. A single stem says a lot without anyone needing to find the words.
Enjoying one is easy. Walk through a public rose garden and compare the shades. Bring a stem home and keep it fresh by trimming the end at an angle and changing the water every couple of days. If you grow roses, this is a fine moment to check for spent blooms; snipping them off often encourages the plant to keep flowering.
The thorns, by the way, are technically prickles, outgrowths of the stem's outer layer. They still hurt, so gloves help when pruning.
