A little reason to celebrate

National Roots Day

Family · History · December 23

National Roots Day is about family history: tracing where your people came from, collecting their stories and keeping them for the next generation.

National Roots Day

National Roots Day falls on Wednesday, December 23, 2026. That is 57 days away.

Every family has a story that stops a few generations back. Somebody knows a great-grandmother's first name but not her maiden name, or remembers a town without being sure what country it was in. National Roots Day is about following those threads a little further.

Tracing roots usually starts close to home. A box of photographs with nothing written on the back. A recipe card in handwriting nobody recognizes. An uncle who tells the same story about the farm every holiday, with slightly different details each time. From there the search can move to public records, old letters, cemetery headstones and census pages, where names were sometimes spelled however the person writing them heard them.

The most valuable sources are often still living. Older relatives carry details that never made it onto paper: what a house smelled like, who didn't speak to whom, why the family moved. Sitting down with them and asking simple questions tends to produce more than any database. Recording the conversation, with permission, keeps their voice along with the facts.

People mark the day in different ways. Some build a family tree. Some label photos so the next person isn't left guessing. Some cook a dish that came down through the family and finally ask where it came from.

A photo with a name and a place written lightly in pencil on the back is easier for the next generation to trace.
