A little reason to celebrate

National Rum Punch Day

Drink ยท September 20

A day for rum punch, the mixed drink of rum, citrus, sugar and spice, usually made by the bowl and shared with a group.

National Rum Punch Day

National Rum Punch Day falls on Monday, September 20, 2027. That is 328 days away.

Rum punch is a mixed drink built from a few simple parts: rum, citrus juice, something sweet, and a bit of spice. Many versions add fruit juice such as pineapple or orange, and a dash of bitters or a grating of nutmeg on top.

It has long been associated with the Caribbean, where rum is made from sugarcane or molasses. Recipes vary from island to island and from house to house, and plenty of people guard a family version.

A well-known rhyme gives the classic proportions: one of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak. Sour is the lime, sweet is the syrup, strong is the rum, and weak is water, ice or juice. It is less a strict rule than a starting point you can taste and adjust.

Punch is a social drink. It is usually mixed in a big bowl or pitcher, set out with a ladle, and poured into small cups through an afternoon. Fresh fruit slices floating on top make it look as good as it tastes, and a large block of ice melts more slowly than cubes, so the bowl stays balanced longer.

For people who skip alcohol, the same mix of citrus, sweetness and spice works well with sparkling water or ginger beer in place of the rum. Nutmeg grated fresh over the top smells far better than the pre-ground kind.
