National Saxophone Day falls on Friday, November 6, 2026. That is 10 days away.
The saxophone is a woodwind that looks like it wandered over from the brass section. Its body is usually brass, but the sound starts with a single cane reed clamped to a mouthpiece, much like a clarinet. That reed is why it counts as a woodwind.
The family comes in several sizes. Soprano, alto, tenor and baritone are the most common, and the bigger the horn, the lower and rounder the voice. The soprano is often straight, while the others curve up at the bell. Players press keys that open and close pads over tone holes, and a good player can make the same horn sound breathy, bright, soft or close to a shout.
That range explains why the sax turns up almost everywhere. It is central to jazz, it carries melodies in school concert and marching bands, it has a place in classical music, and it has long played the solo in pop and rock songs. A single honk in the middle of a song can be the part everyone remembers.
Listening is the easy way in. Put on a jazz record and follow one player through a solo, or compare an alto and a tenor on the same tune. If there is an old horn in a closet, a music shop can check the pads and suggest a fresh reed, since reeds wear out and a tired one makes even a fine instrument squeak.
Reeds come in numbered strengths, and beginners usually start on a softer one.
