A little reason to celebrate

National Scarf Day

Fun · Seasonal · September 27

National Scarf Day is about the scarf: a long strip of wool, cotton or silk that keeps necks warm and adds a bit of color to cold-weather outfits.

National Scarf Day

National Scarf Day falls on Monday, September 27, 2027. That is 335 days away.

A scarf is one of the simplest pieces of clothing there is. It is a strip of fabric, usually long and narrow, that wraps around the neck. Some are knitted from thick wool, some are woven from cotton, and some are thin silk squares that do more for an outfit than for the temperature.

In cold weather the job is practical. A scarf closes the gap between a coat collar and the chin, which is where wind likes to sneak in. Pulled up over the nose and mouth, it makes a walk to the bus stop a little more bearable. In milder seasons a light scarf becomes decoration, tied loosely or knotted at the side.

There are a surprising number of ways to tie one. The plain drape, the loop where the scarf is folded in half and the ends pulled through, and the simple wrap that goes around twice all look different with the same piece of fabric. Many people own one favorite scarf and several others that live in a drawer, waiting for their turn.

Scarves are also a classic first knitting project, since a scarf is mostly rows of the same stitch repeated until it feels long enough. Handmade ones tend to come out a bit uneven, and that is part of why people keep them for years.

Marking the day can be as easy as choosing a scarf on purpose instead of grabbing whichever one is by the door. The one with the slightly crooked stripes counts.
