A little reason to celebrate

National Scrapbook Day

Hobby ยท The first Saturday in May

A day for scrapbooking: gathering photos, ticket stubs and notes onto decorated pages that keep a stretch of life in one place.

National Scrapbook Day

National Scrapbook Day falls on Saturday, May 1, 2027. That is 186 days away.

A scrapbook is a book of pages filled with photos, clippings and small paper keepsakes, arranged and labeled by hand. National Scrapbook Day, also called National Scrapbooking Day, falls on the first Saturday in May and gives the hobby its own spot on the calendar.

The materials are humble. Concert tickets, a pressed leaf, a birthday card, a map with a route traced in pen. On their own they end up in drawers. Glued onto a page next to a photo and a line of handwriting, they start to tell a story. Many scrapbookers use acid-free paper and adhesives so the pages don't yellow or turn brittle as quickly over the years.

Styles vary a lot. Some pages are packed with stickers, patterned paper and cut-out titles. Others are spare, just one picture and a few sentences. Some people work through a whole vacation in one sitting, and others add a page now and then for years. Digital scrapbooking, where pages are designed on a screen and sometimes printed, is popular too.

The day often brings people together. Friends spread supplies across a kitchen table, trade scraps and borrow each other's scissors. Craft groups and libraries sometimes host crop sessions, the scrapbooker's name for a gathering where everyone works on their own pages side by side.

The captions tend to matter most later on. A photo of a picnic is nice. A photo with the names of everyone there, and what they ate, is the page someone will read twice.
