A day about shoes and the people who go without them, with simple ways to pass on a sturdy pair to someone who can use it.

National Shoe the World Day falls on Monday, March 15, 2027. That is 139 days away.
Shoes do quiet work. They keep feet warm, dry and out of harm's way on rough ground, hot pavement and broken glass. The name suggests a big idea, putting shoes on everyone who needs them, and the day is a nudge toward that one pair at a time.
Most of us own more shoes than we wear. There are the boots bought for one trip, the sneakers that pinched from day one, the dress shoes waiting for an occasion that keeps not happening. They sit in closets while someone else, sometimes in the same town, is making do with a pair that has split at the sole.
The usual way to mark the day is to look at that closet honestly. Shoes in good shape can go to a local shelter, a clothing closet or a charity drop box. Many groups that collect shoes prefer pairs that are clean, still wearable and tied or rubber-banded together, so they don't get separated in a bin. Children's shoes are often in steady demand, because kids outgrow them long before they wear them out.
Some people go a step further and buy a new pair in a common size to donate, or organize a small collection at work, school or a place of worship. Socks tend to travel well alongside shoes.
It also helps to take care of the pairs you keep. A cleaning, a new set of laces or a quick visit to a cobbler can add a long stretch of life to a good shoe.
