A little reason to celebrate

National Siamese Cat Day

Animal ยท April 6

A day for the Siamese cat, the talkative, blue-eyed breed with a pale coat and darker points on its face, ears, paws and tail.

National Siamese Cat Day

National Siamese Cat Day falls on Tuesday, April 6, 2027. That is 161 days away.

The Siamese cat is easy to spot across a room. It has a slim body, a wedge-shaped head, large ears and bright blue eyes. Its coat is pale, with darker color on the face, ears, paws and tail, a pattern known as points.

Those points come from temperature. The gene behind the coloring lets darker pigment form only on the cooler parts of the body, which is why Siamese kittens are born nearly white and darken as they grow.

Then there is the voice. Siamese cats are famous for talking, with a loud, low call they use often and with conviction. People who live with one tend to describe a cat that follows them from room to room, wants to be involved in everything and has opinions about breakfast. They are social animals and usually do best with company and plenty to do.

The breed takes its name from Siam, the old name for Thailand, where these cats were known long before they became familiar elsewhere. Today the classic point colors include seal, chocolate, blue and lilac.

People with a Siamese at home often mark the day with extra play, a new puzzle toy or simply a long conversation, which the cat will be glad to lead. Everyone else can admire photos, read about the breed or visit a local shelter, where a pointed coat sometimes turns up in a cat that needs a home.
