A little reason to celebrate
Seasonal ยท The Saturday after the fourth Thursday in November
A Saturday for noticing the independent shops, cafes and family businesses that give a neighborhood its character, and the people who run them.
Small Business Saturday falls on Saturday, November 28, 2026. That is 32 days away.
Small Business Saturday puts the spotlight on independent businesses: the bookshop with the cat in the window, the hardware store where someone knows exactly which screw you need, the bakery that sells out of its best loaf by ten.
What these places share is scale. The owner is often the person behind the counter, and decisions get made a few feet from where you are standing. That shows up in small ways. A shelf arranged around one person's taste. A menu that changes because a supplier down the road had a good week. A clerk who remembers your name, or at least your dog's.
People mark the day mostly by paying attention. Some take a slow walk down a main street they usually drive past. Others finally step into the shop they have been curious about for years. Many towns and business districts organize their own touches, like window displays, sidewalk chalk or a coffee stop between blocks.
You do not have to spend anything to take part. A kind online review, a recommendation passed to a friend, or a photo of a favorite storefront shared with neighbors can matter to a business that runs on word of mouth. So can simple conversation. Owners of small shops tend to have good stories about how they got there, and many are happy to tell them when the line is short.
A local business is also a local landmark. The sign above the door is often how people give directions in town.
