A day for the gloriously impractical toys people remember best: wind-up gadgets, novelty gags and odd little playthings that do one thing.

Stupid Toy Day falls on Wednesday, December 16, 2026. That is 50 days away.
Some toys teach letters or build hand strength. Others just wobble, honk or stick to the wall for a while before peeling off. This day is for the second kind, the toys that are proudly short on purpose and long on personality.
Think of the plastic bird that dips its beak into a glass, the slinky that walks down stairs, the rubber ball that bounces higher than seems polite, or the putty that copies newspaper print. None of them solve a problem. People still keep them in desk drawers for years.
Part of the appeal is how simple they are. A spring, a little weight, some stretchy material, and suddenly a grown adult is watching a toy flip end over end on the kitchen table. Many of these toys run on plain physics, which is why the best ones still work without batteries or an app.
Marking the day can be as easy as digging out an old favorite and seeing whether it still does its trick. Swapping stories helps too. Nearly everyone has one toy they begged for, played with for an afternoon, and then never quite managed to throw away.
The drinking bird, for the record, needs nothing but a glass of water and room temperature air to keep bobbing.
