A little reason to celebrate

National Sundae Day

Food ยท November 11

A day for the ice cream sundae: scoops of ice cream topped with sauce, whipped cream, nuts and the occasional cherry.

National Sundae Day

National Sundae Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. That is 15 days away.

A sundae starts with ice cream in a dish and then keeps going. Sauce goes over the top, usually hot fudge, caramel or something fruity, and after that come the extras: whipped cream, chopped nuts, sprinkles and a cherry if anyone has one.

Part of the appeal is the contrast. Warm fudge meets cold ice cream and firms up into a chewy layer. Crunchy nuts sit against soft cream. The first spoonful is mostly topping, and the last few are usually melted vanilla with a stray sprinkle floating in it.

There is no single correct sundae, which is probably why people argue about them so happily. Some keep it to one flavor and one sauce. Others build something closer to a construction project, with brownies underneath, three kinds of sauce and a banana split down the middle. Ice cream shops and diners have their house versions, and at home the rules are whatever is in the freezer and the pantry.

Marking the day tends to be simple. People stop at a local ice cream parlor, set up a topping bar for family or friends, or make a single careful sundae and eat it before it melts. A tall glass dish and a long spoon help, since the good part often settles at the bottom.

The cherry goes on last, and it is often the one thing left in the dish.
