A little reason to celebrate

National Sunglasses Day

Fun ยท June 27

A day for sunglasses: how they cut glare, why UV protection matters on the label, and simple ways to give your favorite pair some attention.

National Sunglasses Day

National Sunglasses Day falls on Sunday, June 27, 2027. That is 243 days away.

Sunglasses are tinted lenses in a frame, worn to make bright light easier on the eyes. Most people own at least one pair, and many own a drawer of them, each with its own scratch history.

A good pair does two jobs. The tint cuts down how much light reaches your eyes, so a sunny parking lot stops feeling like a stage spotlight. Lenses labeled for UV protection also block ultraviolet light, which you cannot see. Darkness and UV blocking are separate things, so a very dark lens is not automatically a protective one. The label is what tells you.

Polarized lenses add another trick. They filter glare that bounces off flat surfaces like water, wet roads and car hoods. People who fish or drive a lot tend to notice the difference right away.

Then there is style. Round frames, aviators, wraparounds, cat-eye shapes and oversized lenses all come and go, and a pair can say a lot about the person behind it. Marking the occasion usually means wearing a favorite pair, digging an old one out of the glove box, or finally cleaning the lenses properly.

Cleaning is simple. Rinse off grit with water first, then wipe with a microfiber cloth. A shirt hem tends to grind dust into the lens, which is how most of those fine scratches got there in the first place.
