A little reason to celebrate

Take a Walk Outdoors Day

Nature ยท January 20

A plain walk outside, anywhere you are: a street, a field edge, a riverside path or the block around your home, taken on foot and at your own pace.

Take a Walk Outdoors Day

Take a Walk Outdoors Day falls on Wednesday, January 20, 2027. That is 85 days away.

Walking outdoors needs almost nothing. Shoes, a door and somewhere to go, even if that somewhere is back where you started.

What makes it different from walking indoors is the weather and the noise. Air moves. Light shifts as clouds pass. Sounds arrive from places you cannot see: a dog two yards over, a delivery truck backing up, wind in a hedge. A route you drive every day looks unfamiliar at three miles an hour, and you start noticing house numbers, cracked curbs and the one porch that always has a cat on it.

The walk does not have to be long or scenic. Some people go out before breakfast while the streets are quiet. Others wait for the late afternoon, when shadows stretch across sidewalks. A walk in light rain counts too, and it has the benefit of an empty route.

Dress for the actual weather rather than the forecast you hoped for. Layers help, because you warm up within ten minutes of setting out. After dark, something light colored or reflective makes you easier for drivers to see, and a small flashlight helps on uneven pavement.

It also helps to have no destination. Turn left where you usually turn right. Follow a street to its end just to find out what is there. Plenty of neighborhoods have a staircase, footbridge or cut-through path that nobody notices until they are walking.
