A day for taking down the Christmas tree, packing away ornaments and lights, and giving the living room back its usual shape.

National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day falls on Wednesday, January 6, 2027. That is 71 days away.
The tree comes down. After weeks of standing in the corner with lights on and presents underneath, it gets undressed one ornament at a time, and the room slowly remembers what it looked like before.
The work has its own rhythm. Lights come off first, usually in a tangle that seemed impossible to create on purpose. Ornaments go back into boxes, and the fragile glass ones get wrapped in tissue or newspaper. Somewhere in the process a person finds a hook still on a branch and a few strands of tinsel that will turn up in the carpet for months.
For households with a real tree, there is the question of where it goes next. Many towns collect cut trees after the holidays, and some chip them into mulch. A dry tree sheds needles easily, so wrapping it in an old sheet before carrying it out saves some sweeping. Artificial trees fold or come apart in sections and go back into a box or bag until next year.
Packing with a little care pays off later. Winding lights around a piece of cardboard keeps them from knotting, and labeling boxes by room or by type of decoration makes unpacking easier. Some people keep one favorite ornament out a bit longer, or take a photo of the tree before the first branch is bare.
Once the tree is gone, the corner looks oddly large. Most people move a chair back into it within the day.
