A day for noticing the tools and gadgets that shape daily life, from the humble can opener to the phone in your pocket.

National Technology Day falls on Tuesday, May 11, 2027. That is 196 days away.
Technology is any tool people make to solve a problem. A smartphone counts, and so does a zipper, a pair of eyeglasses or the lever on a toaster. This is a day for paying attention to all of it, the shiny and the ordinary alike.
Most of the technology we use goes unnoticed until it stops working. A light switch is a good example. You flip it a dozen times a day without a thought, yet behind it sits a whole chain of wires, circuits and power lines. Looking closely at one familiar object and asking how it works can be surprisingly absorbing.
For hobbyists, the day fits right in. Some people take apart an old radio or clock to see the parts inside. Others build a simple circuit, write a few lines of code or finally learn what all those settings on their camera do. Kitchen gadgets, bicycles and sewing machines all have clever engineering worth a second look.
It is also a chance to share. Showing a grandparent how to make a video call, or having a teenager explain a favorite app, turns technology into conversation. Libraries often lend out more than books, and many have maker spaces, 3D printers or classes for beginners.
An old gadget in a drawer can tell a story too. A flip phone, a cassette player or a film camera shows how quickly tools change, and how some of them still work perfectly well.
