A light, sparkly day for tiaras: what they are, how they differ from crowns, and easy ways to wear one for no particular reason.

International Tiara Day falls on Monday, May 24, 2027. That is 209 days away.
A tiara is a jeweled or decorative half crown worn on the head, usually sitting toward the front and rising to a peak in the middle. Unlike a full crown, it does not circle all the way around. That open back is what lets it rest neatly on top of styled hair.
They come in every grade of glamour. Some are made of metal set with gems or crystals, the kind seen at formal state occasions. Others are plastic and glitter, sold in party aisles and worn by small children over pajamas. Brides wear them, pageant winners wear them, and plenty of people keep one in a drawer for birthdays. The design tends to follow a few patterns: scrolls, flowers, stars, or a simple row of points.
Marking the day mostly means putting one on. People wear tiaras to the office, to dinner, or around the house while doing ordinary chores, which is half the appeal. A vacuum cleaner looks different from under a row of rhinestones. Others dig out an old one from a wedding or a costume box and share a photo, or make a new one from cardboard, foil and craft gems.
A tiara stays put with combs or small loops on each end, and many are designed to be pinned through with bobby pins rather than balanced on the head.
