National Tortilla Chip Day falls on Wednesday, February 24, 2027. That is 120 days away.
A tortilla chip starts life as a corn tortilla. Cut it into wedges, fry or bake it until it turns crisp, add salt, and you have one of the most useful snacks in the American kitchen.
The best ones snap cleanly and carry a toasty corn flavor that holds up next to anything. Restaurant chips often arrive warm, a little uneven, and slightly glossy from the fryer. Bagged chips range from thin and delicate to thick and sturdy, and the thick ones exist for a reason. A heavy scoop of bean dip will break a weak chip every time.
Most people mark the day by eating chips with something. Salsa is the classic partner, followed closely by guacamole and melted queso. Nachos take the idea further, with chips layered under cheese, beans, jalapenos and whatever else is in the refrigerator. Some cooks also crumble chips over soup or salad for crunch, or simmer them in sauce for chilaquiles.
Homemade chips are easier than they sound. Day-old corn tortillas work better than fresh ones because they have dried out a bit, so they crisp faster and soak up less oil. A sprinkle of salt right after cooking sticks best while the chips are still hot.
The last chip in the basket is almost always a broken one, which is why it gets saved for the bottom of the salsa bowl.
