A little reason to celebrate

National TV Dinner Day

Food · Fun · September 10

A look at the TV dinner, the frozen tray meal with its own little compartments, and easy ways to enjoy one in front of a favorite show.

National TV Dinner Day

National TV Dinner Day falls on Friday, September 10, 2027. That is 318 days away.

The TV dinner is a complete meal frozen on a single tray, with a compartment for each part. Picture a slab of turkey or meatloaf, a scoop of mashed potatoes, a square of peas and carrots, and sometimes a small dessert tucked into the corner. You heat the whole thing, peel back the cover and eat.

The tray is the clever part. Each food stays in its own section, so the gravy keeps away from the brownie and nothing has to be plated. The name comes from the idea of eating it in front of the television, often on a folding tray table, instead of at the dinner table.

Old trays were aluminum and went in the oven. Most today are plastic or paperboard and go in the microwave, which is why the box tells you to vent the film or stir halfway through. The menu has grown too, from classic roast dinners to pasta, enchiladas and breakfast plates.

Marking the day is easy. Pick a tray from the freezer aisle, or build your own with leftovers in a sectioned plate. Then settle in with a show, ideally one that runs about as long as the meal does. A rerun of an old sitcom fits the mood.

People tend to have a firm opinion about which compartment to start with. Plenty of them go straight for the dessert corner while it is still warm.
