A day for curiosity about rarely heard musical instruments, from the theremin to the hurdy-gurdy, and the people who play them.

Uncommon Instrument Awareness Day falls on Saturday, July 31, 2027. That is 277 days away.
Most people can name a guitar, a piano and a drum kit without thinking. Fewer can picture a hurdy-gurdy, a theremin or a nyckelharpa, and that gap is the subject here: instruments that are real, playable and simply not heard very often.
Each one tends to come with a surprise. The theremin is played without being touched, as the player moves their hands near two antennas to change pitch and volume. The hurdy-gurdy has a crank that turns a wheel against the strings, so it hums and drones like a fiddle crossed with a small engine. The glass harmonica makes its eerie tone from spinning glass bowls and a wet fingertip. Hearing any of them for the first time can feel like learning a new color exists.
Marking the day is mostly a matter of listening. People look up recordings, watch players demonstrate how their instruments work, or ask a musician friend about the odd thing in the corner of their practice room. Music shops and community music groups sometimes have one unusual instrument tucked away, and owners are often glad to explain it.
If you want to try making a sound yourself, the bar is low. A kazoo, a jaw harp or a set of tuned water glasses will get you started, and the water glasses cost nothing but a little patience with the faucet.
