National Underwear Day falls on Thursday, August 5, 2027. That is 282 days away.

Underwear is the first thing most people put on in the morning and the last thing they think about all day. It sits closest to the skin, does its job quietly, and rarely gets a second glance unless something is wrong with it.

The category is wider than it looks. Briefs, boxers, boxer briefs, bikinis, thongs, undershirts, camisoles and long underwear all count, and each one suits a different body, season or habit. Cotton is the classic fabric because it is soft and breathable. Synthetic blends stretch and dry quickly, which is why they show up in athletic styles. Wool, oddly enough, makes very good long underwear for cold weather.

Marking the day tends to be practical. Plenty of people take it as a nudge to open the top drawer and be honest about what is in there: the pair with the tired elastic, the sock that wandered in years ago, the one favorite that gets worn far more than its share. Others simply buy a fresh pack or try a cut they have never worn.

There is also a giving side. Shelters and clothing drives often list new underwear and socks among the items they need most, because donated used clothing cannot cover them.

Elastic waistbands, the stretchy band most people never think about, made modern underwear far easier to fit than the buttons and ties that came before.

Ways to celebrate

• Sort your underwear drawer and retire pairs with worn-out elastic.
• Donate a pack of new underwear to a local shelter or clothing drive.
• Try a fabric or cut you have not worn before.
• Check a care label and wash delicates the way it suggests.
