A little reason to celebrate

Valentine's Day

Fun · Family · February 14

Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day, is when Americans trade cards, flowers and sweets with the people they love.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day falls on Sunday, February 14, 2027. That is 110 days away.

Valentine's Day, also known as Saint Valentine's Day, is set aside for affection. People give cards, flowers, chocolates and small gifts to partners, friends and family, and the color red shows up nearly everywhere.

The card is the heart of it, sometimes literally. Store shelves fill with folded paper hearts, lace edges and short rhyming verses. In many elementary classrooms, children bring a stack of little valentines so that everyone in the room gets one, often tucked into decorated shoeboxes or paper bags taped to their desks.

Adults tend to go quieter and closer. A dinner out, a home-cooked meal, a box of chocolates with a map on the lid so nobody bites into the coconut by mistake. Roses are the classic flower, red most of all, though plenty of people pick tulips or whatever looks cheerful at the corner market.

It is not only for couples. Friends swap notes, parents slip candy into lunch boxes, and some people send a card to a grandparent who still keeps every one they have ever received. Candy conversation hearts, the small pastel ones stamped with two or three words, turn up in office bowls and get read aloud more than they get eaten.

A handwritten line tends to outlast the chocolate. Even a few honest words on plain paper can end up in a drawer for years.
