A little reason to celebrate

Vesuvius Day

History ยท August 24

Vesuvius Day looks back at the volcano near Naples, Italy, whose ancient eruption buried the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Vesuvius Day

Vesuvius Day falls on Tuesday, August 24, 2027. That is 301 days away.

Mount Vesuvius rises over the Bay of Naples in southern Italy, a broad green mountain with a crater at the top. In Roman times it erupted with enormous force and buried the nearby towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Vesuvius Day is a chance to remember that eruption and the people who lived beneath the mountain.

The disaster left an unusual kind of record. Ash and volcanic debris covered streets, shops and homes, and much of what was buried stayed in place for a very long time. When excavations began, people found painted walls, bakeries with loaves still in the ovens, and graffiti scratched into plaster. Archaeologists later poured plaster into hollows left in the hardened ash, making casts that show the shapes of people and animals at the moment they were overcome.

We also have an eyewitness. Pliny the Younger watched from across the bay and later described the eruption in letters to the historian Tacitus. His account of a towering cloud shaped like a pine tree is why scientists still use the term Plinian eruption.

Most people mark the day quietly, by reading about Pompeii, looking through photos of the ruins, or watching a documentary. It also leads naturally to thinking about volcanoes in general and how scientists watch them.

Vesuvius is still an active volcano, and towns and farms crowd its lower slopes today, much as they did in Roman times.
