National Vietnam War Veterans Day

Commemorative ยท March 29

National Vietnam War Veterans Day honors the Americans who served in the Vietnam War, those who did not return, and the families who waited for them.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day falls on Monday, March 29, 2027. That is 153 days away.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day recognizes the men and women of the United States armed forces who served during the Vietnam War. It honors those who came home, those who died, those who remain missing, and the families who carried the weight of their absence.

The war asked a great deal of the people sent to fight it. Many served long tours in jungle, river delta and highland terrain, far from home and often very young. Others served at sea, in the air, or in support roles that kept the larger effort running. When they returned, many found that their service was not openly acknowledged, and some waited a long time to hear simple words of thanks.

The day is marked quietly in many communities. Veterans organizations, town halls and memorial parks hold ceremonies with a reading of names, the presentation of colors, or a moment of silence. Some families visit graves. Others gather with old friends from a unit and spend the afternoon talking.

In Washington, D.C., the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a long wall of polished black granite engraved with the names of service members who died or remain missing. Visitors often run their fingers across a name, and some make a pencil rubbing of it on paper to take home. Letters, photographs and small personal objects are left along the base of the wall.

For a veteran in your own family or neighborhood, a plain question about where they served, followed by real listening, can mean more than a formal ceremony.
