A little reason to celebrate

National Vinyl Record Day

Hobby ยท August 12

National Vinyl Record Day celebrates the grooved disc that plays music through a needle, and the people who still love listening to records.

National Vinyl Record Day

National Vinyl Record Day falls on Thursday, August 12, 2027. That is 289 days away.

A vinyl record is a flat disc with one long spiral groove pressed into each side. As the turntable spins, a needle rides that groove, and its tiny wiggles are turned back into sound. Nothing about it is hidden. You can hold the music up to the light and see where the quiet songs sit, because their grooves look a little different from the loud ones.

Listening to a record asks for some participation. You slide it out of the sleeve, set it on the platter, lower the tone arm and wait for that soft crackle before the first note. Most albums need flipping halfway through, which turns a listening session into two acts with an intermission.

People mark the day in easy ways. Some pull out a favorite album and play it start to finish, in order, the way the artist arranged it. Others dig through used bins at thrift stores and record shops, where the covers are half the fun. Large square artwork, liner notes and lyric sheets make a record something to read as well as hear.

Records reward a little care. Holding them by the edges keeps fingerprints off the grooves, and storing them upright helps keep them flat. A dusty record can still play, though the needle will pick up every speck along the way.

If you have a box of old albums in a closet somewhere, the labels in the center often list the song order, the side and the speed the record was meant to spin.
