A little reason to celebrate

International Waffle Day

Food ยท March 25

A day for waffles, the crisp, grid-patterned batter cakes cooked in a hinged iron, marked across the United States and elsewhere.

International Waffle Day

International Waffle Day falls on Thursday, March 25, 2027. That is 149 days away.

A waffle is batter or dough cooked between two hot plates that press a grid of little pockets into it. The outside turns crisp and golden while the inside stays soft. Those pockets are the clever part, since they hold butter and syrup instead of letting it slide off the plate.

The day is marked in many countries, and in the United States too. Here the waffle usually shows up at breakfast or brunch, but it travels well beyond that. Some people stack it with fried chicken, some fold it around ice cream, and some eat it plain out of the toaster on the way out the door.

Styles vary more than you might expect. American waffles are often thin and dense. Belgian-style waffles are thicker, with deeper pockets, and many recipes lighten the batter with beaten egg whites or yeast. Sweet versions get fruit, whipped cream or syrup. Savory ones take cheese, herbs or a fried egg on top.

Making them at home takes a waffle iron and a little patience. Batter usually contains raw egg and flour, so skip the taste test before cooking and let each waffle cook through until it releases easily from the plates. A light brush of oil on the iron helps the first one come out whole, though the first waffle has a long reputation for sticking anyway.

Leftover waffles freeze well. Lay them flat to cool, freeze them, and reheat them in a toaster, where they crisp up again in a few minutes.
