A little reason to celebrate

National Waffle Iron Day

Food ยท June 29

A day for the waffle iron itself: the hinged, grid-patterned griddle that turns plain batter into crisp, pocketed waffles.

National Waffle Iron Day

National Waffle Iron Day falls on Tuesday, June 29, 2027. That is 245 days away.

The waffle iron is two hinged metal plates, each pressed with a grid, that close around batter and cook it from both sides at once. The grid is the whole point. It makes the deep little pockets that hold butter and syrup, and the ridges that turn crisp while the inside stays soft.

Most home irons today are electric, with plates that heat up and a light that tells you when they are ready. Older ones are cast iron with long handles, made to be held over a flame or a stovetop burner and flipped by hand. Some families still have one of those in a cupboard, a little heavy, a little blackened, and still perfectly good. Belgian style irons have deeper grids, which give thicker waffles with bigger pockets.

The iron is more flexible than its reputation. People press leftover mashed potatoes into it, cook hash browns, crisp up stuffing, or toast a sandwich until it comes out marked with squares. Cornbread batter works. So does cookie dough, if you watch it closely.

The hardest part of using one is patience. Opening the lid too early tears the waffle in half, leaving one side stuck to each plate. Waiting until the steam slows down usually means it is done. The first waffle of a batch often comes out a bit pale or uneven, and in many kitchens it goes to whoever is standing closest.
