A day for taking the dog out for a walk, with notes on pace, sniffing, leashes and making the daily loop a little more interesting for both of you.

National Walking the Dog Day falls on Monday, February 22, 2027. That is 118 days away.
Walking the dog is one of the most ordinary things people do, and that is the point here. The day asks for a walk, nothing more complicated than a leash, a dog and a bit of open time.
A walk means different things to each side of the leash. For the person it is a route. For the dog it is mostly a newspaper. Dogs read the world through their noses, and a single lamppost can hold more news than a whole block. Letting a dog stop and sniff is not a delay in the walk. For many dogs it is the main event.
Pace varies a lot by dog. A young terrier may want to trot, while an older dog or a flat-faced breed may prefer a slow amble and plenty of shade. Hot pavement can be hard on paws, so cooler hours and grassy edges tend to suit everyone better.
Some people mark the day by trying a new route, a quiet trail or a different neighborhood, which gives the dog a fresh set of smells. Others keep the usual loop and simply leave the phone in a pocket. Shelters in some areas welcome volunteers to walk dogs who are waiting for homes, and those dogs tend to be very glad of the company.
A spare bag in the pocket and a little water for longer outings cover most of what a walk needs. The rest is up to the dog, who will usually know exactly which bush to visit first.
