A little reason to celebrate

National Weatherperson's Day

History · Commemorative · February 5

A day for the forecasters and meteorologists who track the sky, read the data and tell us whether to bring an umbrella.

National Weatherperson's Day

National Weatherperson's Day falls on Friday, February 5, 2027. That is 101 days away.

Somebody has to tell the rest of us what the sky is planning. Weatherpersons, also called weathermen and weatherwomen, are the meteorologists and forecasters who study the atmosphere and turn what they find into a forecast people can use.

Most people know them from the evening news, standing beside a map and pointing at a band of green. The work behind that segment is quieter. Forecasters read data from weather stations, balloons, radar and satellites, then feed it into computer models that try to predict what the air will do next. Then they decide what to say, which is the harder part, because the atmosphere rarely follows instructions.

The job matters most when the weather turns serious. Warnings about storms, floods, heat and snow come from this same work, and they give people time to get ready. Plenty of forecasters never appear on camera at all. They work for government weather services, airlines, farms, shipping companies and research labs.

Marking the day can be simple. Some people send a note to a local TV meteorologist. Others learn to read a weather map or keep a small notebook of daily highs, lows and clouds. Children often enjoy building a homemade rain gauge from a clear jar and a ruler, then checking it after a shower.

The next time a forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of rain, it means rain is expected at a given spot in the forecast area on about four of every ten days like that one.
